A Brief History of Maine Network for Health
Maine Network for Health was established as “Health Net” in February 1995.
The shareholders were 254 local physicians who organized as Health Physicians, Inc, called Class A Members, and six local hospitals, called Class B Members.
The current shareholding hospitals are:
- Acadia Hospital,
- The Aroostook Medical Center,
- Blue Hill Memorial Hospital,
- Eastern Maine Medical Center,
- Sebasticook Valley Hospital, and
- Millinocket Regional Hospital.
The Initial Business Purpose was stated as:
To develop an integrated network of hospitals, physicians and other health care providers in northern and eastern Maine. The foregoing shall not limit the Corporation’s purposes—the Corporation may pursue any purposes permitted of business corporations and which do not jeopardize the Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), charitable, scientific, educational or other tax-exempt purposes under which individual shareholders may have qualified.
